Are They More Vulnerable Than Men?

Women live longer than men. While it is good to live longer, it also opens up doors for many eye health issues. With age, women are more prone to vision issues. Approximately, two-thirds of women worldwide suffer from eye diseases, visual impairments and blindness.

Women have increased chances of getting glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, cataract and other similar eye diseases. They have an increased chance of getting autoimmune diseases that can impact vision.

What Makes Women’s Eye Health Vulnerable?

Apart from age and longer lifespan, women go through many changes in their life. There are too many hormonal changes that affect their mood and their vision too. Because of hormonal imbalance, women suffer from dry eyes.

Pregnancy is also a cause that can impact the eyesight of women. Pregnancy brings about a lot of physical and emotional changes. A lot of women experience a change in their glasses prescription after childbirth. Postnatal stress is another cause that can fluctuate your vision. This might be temporary or permanent.

Another major cause of deteriorating eye health is stress. Stress doesn’t only give you hair fall. It also impacts your vision.

Women Have Better Vision

Being a woman can give you more health problems, but it also gives you a better vision than men. Women have better colour perception. They are less likely to have colour blindness. They perceive green just as green it is. They can see many different hues of colour that most men can’t. This gives a woman a better fashion sense. They know better about colour combinations and can decorate houses better.

How to Better Take Care of Vision?

Being more vulnerable means you need to take better care. Ageing gives eye problems to both genders. The numbers may vary but it doesn’t mean men don’t have to care for their vision. Women need to be extra careful with their vision. Men also need to be careful. Keep reading to know changing what habits can help you in having better vision.

  1. Smoking is a cause of many health issues. Sipping it can momentary relieve your stress but it doesn’t take away the cause of your stress. Also, it might appear cooler now. Down the lane, you will regret your excessive smoking habits. This habit impacts your eyes. For women, smoking causes complications in childbirth and also causes hormonal imbalances, that further give you dry eyes and other eye health issues.
  2. Excessive drinking should be made sin. Not only do you behave erratically afterwards you also break down your body. Your optic nerves are weakened that gives you weaker eyesight and progression of eye diseases like AMD.
  3. Wear your sunglasses. Do you simply walk out of your home without any protective gear? It will be fine if you do not live in a high UV index region. If you live in the UK, the US or anywhere in southern America where the UV index can go beyond 8, you should not step out of your house without anti-UV glasses and sunglasses. Get your prescription glasses coated with an anti-UV coating and step out of your home worry-free.
  4. Go for an eye test once every two years. If you break or lose your glasses too often, getting eye tested is common. But if you don’t then you should go for a regular eye test every two years. Getting a comprehensive eye test is even better. It will help you know the underlying diseases in advance and you can get your eyes treated in time.
  5. Know your Family History. Relatives can be annoying. But you need to have knowledge of diseases in your family. You do not know what genetic diseases you are vulnerable to. Glaucoma is a genetic disease. If someone in your family has it, you have an increased chance of getting it. With NHS you can get a free eye test if you have a high chance of getting glaucoma.
  6. Replace your cosmetic products every three months. This might sound wasteful, but it is safer. Cosmetic products and makeup products are made of chemicals. This might help you in appearing attractive or breathtaking but they can attribute to your worsening eye conditions. You should change your makeup brushes, fake eyelashes or any such products that you use over your eyes. This will help in avoiding infection in the eyes.
  7. Have a healthy diet. Eating healthy will keep many health issues at bay. Eating fruits and vegetables rich in vitamins good for the eyes can keep your eyesight good. It can stop your myopia from progressing.
  8. Soak in the morning light. You might be a night owl. Waking up early and going for a morning walk might not be possible for you. You can at least stretch your arms and legs after you wake up. Exercising regularly can improve your eye health.
