You must be aware of what blue lights can do to your vision. Naturally occurring blue light is good for your health when taken in average amounts. You can stay all morning outdoors and feel invigorated. If you overstay outdoors, you might feel dizzy from too much sun. When I was a kid, I used to play all day outdoors during the summer vacation. Sometimes, I would start feeling dizzy from too much sun. When you are a kid, your priorities take over your health.

But now, you would instead take your time out.

Blue light emitted from the computer and other digital devices impact your vision and health more negatively than natural blue light. Unlike the sunlight, you are directly staring at your computer or phone screen, putting a strain on your eyes.

Apart from these light sources, artificial light sources, like ceiling lights, can also impact your vision. You cannot start living in the dark, which might help you develop your night vision. (It doesn’t.)

How does light impact your eyes?

Artificial light sources also impact your eyes, just like the blue light from the sun and your digital devices. They also emit blue rays and also extra glaring lights that can make your eyes teary and tired.

Cool White light Bulbs — The traditional incandescent bulbs emit a few UV rays. However, the amount is too little. Prolong exposure can negatively affect your health. UV rays can cause skin cancer, eye cancer and even blindness in extreme cases. If your house has this kind of lighting, it’s high time to change them.

Halogen bulbs — Still using these obsolete light bulbs? Change them ASAP. Your ocular health is at risk.

These lights act just like natural light. They emit blue lights and UV rays, and that too to a sizable extent. They can make your room hotter. It’s suitable for a cold region but not when considering your eye health. The bright light can make your eyes hurt. Also, these lights hinder your sleep cycle.

Compact fluorescent bulbs — In the medieval era, mercury was used for cosmetic purposes. Now, we know how deadly it is. However, your everyday CFLs also contain mercury.

When intact, these do not emit any mercury. But when these get broken, the mercury vapours are released and can affect you.

These bulbs also emit a good amount of UV rays and blue lights.

What kind of lighting to choose for your home?

So, you are setting up your home? Renovating or thinking of renovating? Before doing so, you should consider what kind of light should be good for you. Exposure to sunlight can impact your eyes and also your moods. Plus, different rooms serve different purposes. You will need to think about what kind of light to use and how much to use.

Your Study Room — You might arrange your bookshelves in a room with sufficient light coming in. Maybe natural light gushes in that room. Reading in such a room is a good idea. It will make you feel invigorated. However, suppose you spend too much time inside your study room. In that case, you will need to account for the shade and intensity of natural light entering your room. You will find the room too bright in the mornings and afternoons and then dark in the evenings.

Putting up ceiling lights can help with it and give sufficient light all around.

Your bedroom — The less, the better. Do not put up too many lights in your bedroom. If you have sleeping problems, better use blinders in the window. Red lights are suitable for inducing sleep. You can put up red light bulbs in your room.

If you work from your bedroom, you can use a gooseneck lamp to give light where it is needed. You can work on your papers or your digital devices without getting too many blue light rays in your eyes or getting irritable because of lack of sleep.

Your Workplace — Working from home is a norm. You will need to make space for your workplace in your home too. You will spend most of your hours in that room. And in that situation, you will have to consider what light is impacting your eyes. If you make your place dark like a dungeon, ‘cos it looked good in the movies, you will have to suffer from a lot of eye strain and mood swings. You will be inactive and less efficient in your work.

Make your workplace bright, but not too bright. You will have to check from which direction the light is coming. Is it falling on your computer or on your eyes? Keep your laptop away from the light. You can use lamps to get a glow on your table or ceiling light that sufficiently brightens your workspace.

A solution for your eyes

Renovating is a costly solution. Your eyes are at risk of getting deteriorated. You might develop vision issues in the future. Blue light blocking glasses can give you a comfortable vision and protect you from harmful blue lights. You are exposed to too many artificial lights, which impacts your health and your ocular health. Appropriate glasses with enough blue-light-blocking capability and UV rays blocking efficiency can help you to a great extent.
