After around one and half years of staying in and following restrictions, things are finally beginning to look up. With the spread of vaccinations and lifting of flight bans, there are many travel destinations for us Brits as we approach the New Year. According to Booking.com, which surveyed around 24000 travellers around the world, people who feel the ‘need’ to travel is up 52% from last year.

Apart from regular domestic destinations like Cornwall, Devon and Norfolk, we are raring for foreign travel. Whether you long for beach shores or the rush of cosmopolitan cities, I have compiled a list of hotly anticipated travel destinations.

Travel outside of UK — top destinations

Since the UK covid travel restrictions eased, there are no countries in the “red list” as of now.

Also, travellers who are double vaccinated don’t need a pre-departure covid test before arriving into the UK.

These destinations should definitely be on your list as you plan for travel in 2022.

Montpellier, France

Montpellier is a French modernist masterpiece situated on the white sand Mediterranean coast. Pavement cafes and the old world charm make for a lot of “Instagrammable” spots. Summers are typically the most busy period, so make sure you book rooms in advance. Don’t forget to pack stylish vacay sunglasses as well for a sunny day at the beach.

New York, USA

The city that never sleeps! According to a survey by the Forbes Advisor, Brits picked the USA as their dream destination for 2022. And with such a large country, it is tough to pick just a few destinations. New York has made it to this list with its iconic landmarks — the Statue of Liberty, Mets Museum, small pizza and bagel eateries — among other attractions.

Lisbon Coast, Portugal

This is the perfect family destination, with different coastlines stretching across Portugal’s capital, gold-sand beaches and quaint seaside towns. There are undiscovered seafood cafes and hidden coves to explore as well. The best time to visit is May-June, when it is not too hot or busy. British Airways and easyJet fly direct between the UK and Lisbon airport.

Zermatt, Switzerland

In the mood for some adventure? This Swiss Alpine village is world renowned for its skiing and mountaineering facilities. Just make sure your sunglasses have Polarised lenses to ward off unwanted glare!

The best part is that you don’t have to plan for too long ahead, you can go for a winter escapade soon enough — and it’s just a train ride away from London. Start your journey from the stunning Interlaken, and ride the picturesque, red Glacier Express. This cold weather trip has something for everyone, walk around the beautiful car-free town of Zermatt and take in the beautiful scenery.

Mallorca, Spain

Spain has long been a favourite travel destination for Brits. Mallorca and Ibiza are the most visited locations, and will continue to be popular in 2022. Apart from southern Spain which has incredible beaches, Northern Spain is mostly unexplored. It has stunning mountain ranges, medieval towns, buzzing cities and great food. Do try the delicious wines here! The best time to visit Spain is early spring in April and May.

A common question on everyone’s mind is — “will we be able to travel abroad in 2022?” The good news is that yes, things are beginning to get better and hopefully the worst is behind us. I still recommend wearing masks in crowded places and trying to maintain social distancing as much as possible.

Happy Holidays!
