Your New Year resolution for 2021 should be about eye health!
As 2020 approaches its end and a new year awaiting us, we all must have thought about making new year resolutions. While losing weight, learning new skills and saving money have been a part of our resolutions before, why not do something different this year?
If you plan to improve your health, why not start small with your eyes? We all are grateful for our sight and dedicating this coming year to a better optic health will be a great way to show it.
In fact, eye care should not be defined by time. If you know how good vision contributes to your quality of life, you won’t have a problem with making it your resolution every year.
We all are looking forward to a fresh start, especially after the kind of year that 2020 has been. If you are sold on the idea of looking after your eyes as this year’s resolution, we have also got some tips to get you started on your journey to a better vision.
Book an eye test
Get your eyes checked. We know that you haven’t scheduled an appointment with your eye doctor in a while, but you must do it now.
Changes in your sight don’t happen overnight. They sneak up on you slowly and before you realise, your vision becomes impaired for life. A simple eye examination can detect any possible issue with your sight so you can take actions while there is still time.
You would be surprised to know that severe health problems such as diabetes and brain tumors can be detected in a comprehensive eye exam. Booking an eye test doesn’t cost much and is even free-of-cost sometimes.
Yes, Free! At Specscart, we offer a free eye test facility that you can avail by walking in any of our stores or if you are too busy for that, our opticians are happy to visit your home or workplace and perform the test there.
Digital detoxification
If there is one thing that we all had enough of this year, it has got to be screen time. As the pandemic has caused most of us to spend more time on our digital screens whether it was due to online classes or work from home, we cannot even think about the damage it has done to our eyes.
Cutting down screen time will have you plenty of time to focus on other important things in life and will do wonders for your peepers as well.
What you can do
- If you like to check your social media feed while you are having dinner, stop bringing your smartphone to the dinner table. Enjoy the time with your friends and family instead.
- Using digital devices before bedtime reduces the release of melatonin hormone which interrupts your sleep/wake cycle. Reading a book before bedtime will help you sleep better and prevent you from eye strain.
- If your work requires you to stare at a computer screen for most part of your day, consider taking short breaks from your screen to prevent the risk of Computer Vision Syndrome. Try the 20–20–20 rule which will require you to look away from your computer in every twenty minutes and look at something that is 20 feet away and hold your gaze for 20 seconds.
Eat a healthy diet
We know you have had the pleasure of munching your favourite sweets and desserts on Christmas. It’s fine; we all do that.
But, including more fruits and green leafy vegetables to your diet will promote good eyesight while contributing to your overall health.
Your eyes need vitamin A, C, E and omega-3 fatty acids to function properly. Eat fishes such as salmon, tuna, sardines and mackerel to reduce the possibility of eye problems such as age-related macular degeneration.
Also, smoking and drinking pose a negative effect on your vision. If you indulge in smoking, you might want to quit it or limit your alcohol consumption if you are a frequent drinker and reap benefits of a healthy vision.
Protective eyewear
Do you avoid wearing your eyeglasses because you don’t like the frame? It is the worst thing you can do to your eyes. We know that not every frame goes with every outfit. But, if you have a habit of giving up your glasses just because it does not seem to do justice with your outfit, update your eyewear collection.
Don’t get stuck in a rut. Buy trendy frames that will make you happy and complete your every look. At Specscart, we have stylish frames at affordable prices so you can have multiple pairs and experiment with your look.
Learn about eye problems
They say ‘Ignorance is bliss’. But in the case of your eyes, ‘Awareness is bliss’. Not only you should know about the condition of your vision, but you must also have a basic understanding of what different eye problems are and their symptoms. This can help you detect any changes in your sight and seek help early.
As you can see, there are so many ways to protect your eye health this new year. Remember, small things can make a huge difference. Use these tips and set a strong foundation for your new year’ resolution.
