Have you heard of the fishbowl effect? It is a condition when you feel like you are inside a fishbowl and everything appears rounded or curved. This usually happens when you are wearing your new prescription glasses.

This is not an unusual occurrence. This happens because your eyes are taking time to adjust to the new corrective lenses. Usually, this adjustment period is of few days to six weeks.

During this adjustment period, you can feel headaches from your glasses, eye pain or vision distortion for some time. These symptoms decrease over time and you feel less and less pain and you get used to your new glasses.

However, if these symptoms do not subside, then you might be wearing faulty prescription glasses. You should get your eye tested and check where the problem lies.

How to know if your prescription glasses are faulty or not?

The adjustment period for varifocal lenses is longer than regular glasses. For normal glasses, it is usually 2 weeks. By 2 weeks you shouldn’t be facing any problems because of glasses. The telltale signs for faulty lenses.

1. Squinting

If you are squinting a lot, then your glasses are faulty. You subconsciously squint to get the correct vision. You don’t require to squint or make adjustments to your posture to see clearly with correct prescription lenses. This should be corrected by your glasses. If you notice, you are doing it, then you should get an eye test.

There might be a minor error in your prescription that is causing the issue.

2. Letters appear blurry

Even after wearing glasses, your vision is blurry. Not everything appears blurry but some objects at a certain distance are difficult to see. You might be having a hard time reading texts on a book. You will adjust the distance to read your book. If you require to make such adjustments then you need to get an eye test. You might have missed on your near vision or your glasses were not made with precision.

3. Horizontal or vertical blurriness

Everything appears clear, however, whenever you read, you see blurriness around some letters. You are either seeing blurred lines along the horizontal axis or vertical axis or both. If you are facing this issue then you have astigmatism. You need to check the cylindrical power of your eyes to get this corrected.

4. Unclear vision

If you are having unclear vision with your new glasses, your glasses are faulty. With prescription glasses, you will be able to see clear and sharp images. With new glasses, you will find your depth perception falter. You will see things closer than they actually are. This is normal and it is only your eyes that are getting acquainted with the new prescription. This condition subsides after a time. However, if your vision is still not clear after a two weeks adjustment period (6 weeks for varifocals) then get your glasses checked.

If you have bought cheap prescription glasses with varifocal lenses of low quality, you will be having a lot of problems. It is harder to adjust to varifocal glasses. If they are of low quality, then your vision will be unclear, and also you will have headaches from them.

5. Headache even after two weeks

You shouldn’t get a headache after the adjustment period. There is slight discomfort that you face when getting used to your glasses, however, headache after a long time is not normal. It will be troublesome for you even if you get a headache during the adjustment period. If you are having a severe headache, then you should check it with your doctor.

You sometimes have a headache from working on computers. This is not because of your glasses but because of the blue light emission from the digital screen. Get blue light filter glasses with an accurate prescription for your next prescription glasses.
